Explore Lake Manyara National Park – Tanzania’s Northern Circuit Gem
Home to tree-climbing lions and a vibrant flamingo-filled lake, Lake Manyara National Park is a must-visit destination. Its lush forests and diverse wildlife make it a unique stop on your Northern Circuit safari adventure.
At an altitude of 5895m above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro or the “Roof of Africa” is Africa’s highest mountain and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world. Only three degrees south of the equator, it is snow-capped all year around. Its most outstanding features are the three major volcanic centres, Shira, Mawenzi and Kibo, all now dormant. There are 5 routes to the summit, any healthy person can climb the mountain, you will feel that you have conquered the world when you reach the summit.
Often described as having a lunar beauty, Lake Natron offers something a little bit different. The lake gets its deep red color from salt-loving organisms and algae. This algae growth has also fostered the development of Lesser Flamingo nests. Amazingly, 2.5 million flamingos make Lake Natron their home and it is considered one of their only breeding grounds, making preservation of the lake an environmental concern. Although most human settlements throughout history have formed around lakes and rivers, the barren landscape around Lake Natron tells a story of a place where survival is not easy.
The age of Lake Eyasi is estimated at 65 million years, just after dinosaurs became extinct. The feature formed due to the opening of a rift on the valley floor. For over 50,000 years, hunter–gatherers known as the Hadza or Hadzabe have lived around the lake’s shores. To the south-east, specifically the swampy Yaeda Valley, there are the Datooga, a pastoralist people. It’s an excellent add-on to a safari in either or both of those areas, as well as a great destination in its own right!
Arusha National Park is known for its abundance of tropical birds. With over four hundred different species in this relatively small park, you can easily spot them as you drive through the tropical rainforest! Often the lakes of the park are filled with thousands and thousands of flamingos, including the rare Greater Flamingo. The park also has some beautiful craters, waterfalls, mountains and grassy areas. The park is known as the home of the Colobus monkey, and therefore one of the reasons to visit the park. You can opt for a “Walking Safari”, and you will find that it is a very special feeling to really enjoy the wildlife up close, without the protective sheeting of the safari vehicle: Giraffes pass you on their stilts, you hear the trumpets of elephants, in a clearing you see a troop of Anubis baboons.
